18 November marks an important anniversary at the steel-rolling plant — 60 years since the founding of the precision alloys shop. This building, which now houses the main part of Petersburg Plant of Precision Alloys’ production capacity, has a rich history of achievements and innovations.
The shop’s history began in November 1963, when construction started at the steel-rolling plant of the city’s first production unit for melting precision alloys. Within a few years not only a modern building was erected but also a laboratory responsible for the precise ratio of chemical elements in the alloys.
By early 1965 the building was ready for equipment installation, and in August of the same year a team of steelmakers under experienced engineers produced the first successful heat. This period was also marked by commissioning of the first rolling mill.
Launching the shop in the 1960s was a laborious, complex process that required proactive specialists. Eleven young metallurgical engineers and physicists — graduates of leading technical universities (Leningrad Polytechnic Institute and the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys) — joined the project. From the first steps they showed outstanding initiative and took part in the drive for technical progress in the precision alloys laboratory.
Throughout the enterprise’s history, close attention has been paid to quality control. Strict adherence to process technology and precise chemical composition ensure the unique properties of precision alloys. The plant’s laboratories play a key role, maintaining the highest product quality standard.
Today, 60 years later, the former precision alloys shop remains at the center of attention, supplying high-precision materials to various industries. The drive for innovation and high product quality inspires plant employees to reach new heights in precision alloy production.
