Metallurgist’s Day: history and meaning of the holiday

Metallurgist’s Day is celebrated annually in the Russian Federation on the third Sunday of July. This holiday symbolizes the importance of the metallurgical industry for the country.

But did you know that Metallurgist’s Day has its own history beginning back in 1957? Let us dive into the past and learn more about this holiday, its establishment, and its significance for Russia.

28 September 1957 became a special day for the domestic metallurgical industry. On that day the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established Metallurgist’s Day. Thus the country’s leadership paid tribute to steelmakers, rollers, blacksmiths, and other metallurgical workers who made an invaluable contribution to victory in the Great Patriotic War and postwar reconstruction. For many decades this day became a symbol of honor and recognition of labor at metallurgical enterprises.

When and how Metallurgist’s Day is celebrated

Originally the celebration date of Metallurgist’s Day was set as the 3rd Sunday of July. Later there were attempts to move that date, but it was left unchanged. The previously established day was reaffirmed by several decrees of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR: first on 01.10.1980, second on 01.11.1988.

Today Metallurgist’s Day is considered one of the most significant holidays in many cities of the Russian Federation, especially where large metallurgical enterprises are located. In Nizhny Tagil, Monchegorsk, Magnitogorsk and Chelyabinsk, Novokuznetsk, Lipetsk and Taganrog, Norilsk and many other cities this day is celebrated with special flair. Mass festivities are arranged with parades, fairs, concerts with local groups and invited stars, and workers of this industry so important to Russia’s economy are congratulated with joy and pride.

But Metallurgist’s Day is not only recognition of professionalism and labor; it is also an opportunity to celebrate achievements, innovations, and technological breakthroughs in metallurgy. Metallurgical plants and combines demonstrate advanced technologies being introduced and their own innovative developments, share achievements and development plans.

The title “Honored Metallurgist of Russia”

The metallurgical industry is the second most important in the Russian Federation after oil and gas. And the contribution of workers in this field has not been left unnoticed. Employees of metallurgical enterprises with merits in the industry and at least 20 years of service may receive the title of Honored Metallurgist of Russia. Those awarded receive a silver oval breast badge measuring 30 × 40 mm.
