A new tensile testing machine has been put into operation at PZPS

A modern tensile testing machine for determining mechanical characteristics of materials was recently commissioned at PZPS. This significant upgrade in laboratory infrastructure opened new opportunities for precise analysis and evaluation of materials, which is especially important for maintaining high quality of products manufactured.

Mechanical characteristics of materials: why they matter

Mechanical characteristics determine how a material will behave under various loads and external factors. Based on these characteristics, designers choose suitable alloys for various industrial and engineering projects.

Main properties subject to measurement include:

  1. Modulus of elasticity (Young’s modulus) — a value showing the material’s ability to return to its original shape after elastic deformation (compression, tension).
  2. Ultimate strength — the maximum tensile stress a material can withstand before fracture.
  3. Yield strength — the stress at which the material begins to deform plastically. When yield strength is reached, irreversible changes occur in the crystal lattice of the alloy or steel.
  4. Elongation after fracture — the magnitude of material deformation during the test.

These properties allow engineers and designers to effectively choose steels and alloys that will be durable, reliable, and safe under planned operating loads.

Capabilities of the new tensile testing machine

The new tensile testing machine at PZPS significantly expands the range of available tests and analyses. With it the following measurements can be performed:

  • modulus of elasticity;
  • proportionality limit and deformation at that limit;
  • physical yield strength and deformation at it;
  • conventional yield strength;
  • temporary resistance (ultimate strength);
  • maximum force and deformation at maximum force;
  • conventional breaking stress;
  • breaking force and deformation at breaking force;
  • elongation after fracture.

Also the machine’s new software supports building test diagrams in various coordinates such as “force–deformation,” “force–displacement,” “stress–deformation,” and “stress–displacement.” This makes it possible to run tests in cycling mode, to a given deformation, or until a certain specimen loading force is reached.

PZPS production: specialized precision alloys

The tensile testing machine is especially important for testing materials produced at PZPS, including:

  • Precision alloys for elastic elements: 40KhKhNM, 36NKhTYu, 17KhNGT.
  • Corrosion-resistant steels: 12Kh18N10T, 12Kh18N9, 12Kh18N9SMR, 10Kh17N13M3T.
  • Precision alloys with high electrical resistance: Kh15Yu5, Kh23Yu5, Kh23Yu5T, Kh20N80N, Kh15N60N.
  • Precision alloys with specified TCLE: 29NK, 36N, 42N.
  • Spring and tool steels: 60S2A, 65G, 70, 70S2KhA, U8A, U10A.
  • Heat-resistant and heat-resistant alloys: KhN78T, 20Kh13, as well as alloys analogous to Inconel 625, Inconel 718, and Inconel C-276.

Producing these materials requires thorough analysis and quality control. The new tensile testing machine effectively performs the assigned task and makes it possible to carry out all necessary checks with high accuracy.
