St. Petersburg Precision Alloys Plant modernizes production

At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2025, Petersburg Plant of Precision Alloys (PZPS) and the Committee for Industrial Policy, Innovations and Trade of St. Petersburg signed an agreement on a large-scale modernization of the enterprise.

Under the agreement, a state-of-the-art hot-rolling shop will be created at the plant, as well as a modern research and development center specializing in mastering new alloy grades and improving metallurgical technologies. This step will strengthen PZPS’s position as one of the key players on the Russian and international market in the precision metal products segment.

Hot-rolling shop: a high-tech solution for precision metallurgy

Creating a modern hot-rolling shop will allow the plant to reach a new level in processing precision alloys and special steels.

Key features of the project:

  • Production of steel strip with high geometric accuracy. The shop will produce strip from precision alloys, stainless and carbon steels with minimal deviations in thickness and width. High surface quality will be achieved thanks to a rolling mill equipped with intelligent control systems.
  • Innovative methods of thermomechanical processing. The equipment provides for controlled cooling, which will make it possible to obtain the required microstructures depending on the steel grade and service conditions.
  • Precision control of rolling parameters, ensuring stability of strip characteristics along the entire length.
  • Versatility in the product range. The rolling complex will be able to process dozens of steel and alloy grades.

The new shop will not only increase production capacity but also expand the range of applications of PZPS products in knowledge-intensive industries: from instrument engineering to the defense complex.

Research and development center (RDC)

Creating the RDC will become the foundation for introducing into production new material grades that meet the most modern requirements of world industry.

Main areas of the center’s activity:

  • Mastering production of alloys with specified properties. The center will master production of new grades of precision alloys and special steels with unique elastic, magnetic, electrical, and corrosion characteristics, including alloys with high stability under temperature swings and in aggressive environments.
  • Cooperation with industrial and scientific institutions. The center will work in partnership with leading Russian industrial and scientific organizations.

PZPS focuses not only on modernizing production capacity but also on developing its scientific potential, giving the enterprise a solid base for sustainable technological growth.

Application areas of PZPS products

Thanks to a wide range of alloys produced, PZPS products are used in critically important and knowledge-intensive industries. Our key production areas:

  • Iron-cobalt soft magnetic alloys: 49K2FA-VI, 27KKh — used in producing transformers, magnetic amplifiers, rotors and stators of electrical machines that require high saturation induction and low losses in an alternating field.
  • Iron-nickel alloys: 50N, 50NP, 79NM, 80NM, 81NMA — used in cores of power transformers, chokes, relays, and magnetic shields, ensuring minimal energy losses when alternating current passes.
  • Precision alloys for elastic elements: 17KhNGT, 36NKhTYu, 40KKhNM — used to manufacture elastic sensing elements and spring parts in precision measuring instruments, including pressure sensors and control mechanisms.
  • Corrosion-resistant austenitic steels: 12Kh18N9, 12Kh18N10T — intended for welded parts and structures;
  • 12Kh18N10T — suitable for service in dilute solutions of nitric, acetic, and phosphoric acids, as well as in alkaline and salt environments in the temperature range from –196°C to +600°C.
  • Alloys with high electrical resistance: Kh15Yu5, Kh23Yu5, Kh23Yu5T, Kh15N60-N, Kh20N80-N — used in resistive elements, heating devices, and thermal control systems. They provide stable electrical resistance at high temperatures.
  • These materials find application in instrument engineering, aviation, nuclear power, electronics, machine building, and medical equipment.

    Launching a modern hot-rolling shop and research center opens new horizons for the plant. PZPS looks confidently to the future, combining the best traditions of Russian metallurgy with advanced technologies.
