Dear colleagues and partners!

This day reminds us of the incredible resilience and strength of spirit of the Soviet people who defended our country’s freedom. Their feat is eternal!

May the memory of the Great Victory strengthen our striving for unity, accord, and mutual respect. We wholeheartedly wish you and your loved ones good health, peace, well-being, and new achievements!

The plant’s contribution to Victory: a history of courage and selflessness

The history of Petersburg Plant of Precision Alloys has roots in the work of the legendary enterprise “Krasny Gvozdilshchik,” which became one of the symbols of the labor feat of besieged Leningrad.

Despite terrible conditions — hunger, cold, artillery shelling, and bombings — the plant did not stop work for a single day. This became possible thanks to the selflessness and resilience of workers who understood: the country’s fate depended on their labor.

What the plant produced during the war years

The enterprise made an invaluable contribution to the city’s defense and support of the front. Under blockade conditions vitally important materials and products needed to strengthen the country’s military potential were released:

  • Armor plates for tanks and SPGs. The plant supplied strong steel sheets used in armor protection of Red Army combat vehicles.
  • Railway rails and components. Without railways it was impossible to deliver ammunition, evacuate the wounded, and supply the city. The plant ensured repair and restoration of transport infrastructure.
  • Metal structures for defensive facilities. Beams, reinforcement, parts of fortification structures, and other products needed for construction and repair of fortifications were produced.
  • Parts for armament. Under blockade conditions the plant released components for communications equipment, submachine guns, grenades, mortars, tanks — everything needed at the front.
  • Armored cable for the “Road of Life.” Of special significance was production of 904 tonnes of armored cable wire for the underwater cable across Lake Ladoga — vital communication with the “mainland” was carried out over this line.

In just eight months of 1942 production volume grew almost 20 times — from 35 tonnes in May to 649 tonnes in December. Such a jump became possible thanks to cohesive team work and clear distribution of resources.

People during the blockade: heroism at workplaces

In December 1942 already 1,115 people worked at the enterprise, and more than 75% of the team were women. Workers labored to exhaustion, often at temperatures below zero, under conditions of malnutrition and constant threat of shelling. Plant management organized measures to maintain the health of employees and their family members.

Social and humanitarian initiatives of the plant

  • Making vitamin C from pine needles. The central plant laboratory produced more than 35,000 liters of vitamin C, which saved workers from vitamin deficiency and strengthened their immunity under harsh conditions.
  • Creating a subsidiary farm. In the Toksovo district an agricultural enterprise of 20 hectares was organized. It provided plant workers and their families with food products.
  • Participation in restoring the city. Besides work in production, plant employees voluntarily participated in clearing rubble, restoring city infrastructure, and repairing Leningrad’s housing stock.

In 1943 the plant received a Certificate of Honor for a high harvest grown on private and public gardens, which testifies to self-organization and cohesion of the team.

Industrial feat of Leningrad: interesting facts

To appreciate the scale of Leningraders’ labor, it is worth recalling several significant figures:

  • In besieged Leningrad over 90% of industrial enterprises continued to work.
  • During the war years the Leningrad Front received hundreds of thousands of tonnes of shells, cartridges, and equipment produced in the besieged city itself.
  • The main burden of work fell on the shoulders of women, teenagers, and pensioners — they became the new support of the industrial rear.

These facts are not simply pages of history. They are lessons of true love for the Motherland and heroic labor that everyone should know.

We honor the past — we build the future
