A new aluminum-based alloy for space satellites has been developed

According to RUSAL, which oversees the development, the new material’s thermal expansion coefficient is more than 1.5 times lower than that of conventional aluminum alloys.

The new alloy is highly relevant for satellite and electronics components operating in extreme conditions with strong temperature swings.

Until now parts from such materials were made only mechanically due to extremely low ductility. ILMiT scientists managed to raise plasticity of the alloy while keeping dimensional stability.
