The early 17th century was one of the most dramatic periods in Russian history. the Time of Troubles — an era of political crisis, ruin, and foreign intervention — threatened the very existence of the state. The country was on the brink of collapse, and people’s faith in the future was rapidly fading.
But at that very moment the true character of the people came to the fore. At the call of Nizhny Novgorod zemstvo elder Kuzma Minin and under the leadership of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, a people’s militia was gathered. Its ranks included representatives of different estates and faiths, cities and peoples of the vast country. United by one goal — to protect their homeland and its independence — they won a historic victory, liberating Moscow from Polish-Lithuanian invaders in 1612.
This victory became a symbol that even the greatest difficulties can be overcome if the people act together. It ended the Time of Troubles and paved the way to strengthening Russian statehood.
