08KP Steel Grade — A Quality Low-Carbon Alloy

08KP alloy is a high-quality low-carbon steel with high ductility and increased impact toughness. It is widely used in various industrial sectors.

08KP steel grade is excellently weldable by all types of welding. If the thickness of the welded surfaces is less than 30 mm, there is no need for preheating or subsequent heat treatment. This steel is not prone to cracking during cooling or flake formation.

Steel 08KP is widely used in various industries. When coated with paint or another protective layer, it can be used to manufacture components and structures subjected to significant thermal or chemical exposure.

08KP Alloy — A Highly Demanded Metal for Non-Critical Parts Manufacturing

08KP belongs to the category of non-alloyed metals. This means that the material contains a small amount of impurities, which in this ratio do not significantly affect its physical and mechanical properties.

The composition of 08KP steel is defined by GOST 1050-88, which establishes the following percentage content of chemical elements:

Due to its low carbon content, 08KP steel has relatively low strength and hardness. These properties make 08KP unsuitable for manufacturing elements and components subjected to significant mechanical loads. However, this steel is characterized by fairly high ductility and impact toughness, which facilitates its further processing.

The first two digits 08 in the material designation indicate the approximate carbon content — 0.08%, and the letters KP indicate the degree of metal deoxidation. 08KP is a rimmed steel, meaning it is not fully deoxidized and has a non-uniform structure.

Processing of 08KP Steel Grade

One of the advantages of 08KP is its excellent weldability. Although cracks usually do not form on welds, it is still recommended to clean them of scale by any mechanical method. Pre-weld heat treatment is not mandatory but can be performed to improve the mechanical properties of the finished product.

Heat treatment is carried out in 3 stages and can be applied both before and after welding:

  1. Quenching — a process in which the metal is heated to a critical temperature and then rapidly cooled. This makes the outer layer of the steel stronger and harder. However, this process reduces the material's ductility and toughness. To restore these properties, tempering is used.
  2. Tempering — heating the steel in a furnace to a specific temperature and then gradually cooling it. Tempering can be high (500°C to 680°C), medium (350°C to 500°C), or low (150°C to 250°C). It improves ductility and reduces brittleness after quenching, as well as relieves internal stress.
  3. Annealing — involves heating the alloy to a specific temperature, holding it at that temperature for a certain period, and then slowly cooling it. This process promotes the formation of a uniform alloy structure, eliminates internal stresses, and reduces hardness. It makes subsequent mechanical processing easier and more convenient.

Heat treatment of 08KP steel grade can significantly improve its properties, giving it hardness, ductility, and strength.

Applications

The applications of 08KP steel are quite diverse. It is used to manufacture pipeline elements, fasteners, gaskets, bearings, washers, bushings, lugs, and much more. 08KP is considered an excellent, inexpensive material for producing non-critical components.

The St. Petersburg plant "PZPS" produces cold-rolled strip from 08KP steel in accordance with GOST 503-81. Its own laboratory complex and modern industrial equipment allow for the smelting of metal in strict compliance with established Russian and international standards, as well as in accordance with all customer requirements and wishes.
